Bike Rio RUN
Jonas, the boy from the favela, is famous all over the country. He is only 11 years old and lives in the slums of Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro. Jonas is famous for stealing an electric scooter from Ipanemo and then riding it to the police station. Anyone who watches the news knows that Jonas is on the run- and his story has become a symbol of hope for the underprivileged children of Brazil.
The police were sent after Jonas because he stole the scooter from Ipanema. When Jonas reached the police station, he was very scared. The police had a lot of guns and were ready to shoot him down. Jonas ran inside and locked himself in a room. He knew that if he waited outside, he would not be safe. So he sat down on a chair and placed his hands on top of his head. He stayed like that for hours as the police looked for his scooter. Eventually, someone from the army found Jonas and brought him back to safety.
Jonas's trip to the police station was an exciting and dramatic ride. The scooter that Jonas rode to the police station was very fast- but it was also very dangerous. Anyone who saw Jonas riding through Ipanemo would have shouted at him to stop. However, Jonas knew how to drive carefully because he learned how to use an electric scooter when he was only six years old. Consequently, people stopped in their tracks when they saw Jonas driving by on his scooter. This gave him plenty of time to escape any obstacles that lay ahead.
The police could not catch Jonas because they did not have enough manpower to search all the area. They sent out more men, but none of them had any experience driving fast electric scooters either. Even though they were trained professionals, all of their efforts failed when they tried to catch Jonas- so they had no choice but to give up and return home. It was only after many days of searching that the police were able to find Jonas again- and by then it was too late.
Even though it sounds like a children's book, Jonas's story is true- and it shows how children from Brazil's slums can rise above their circumstances through hard work and determination. Kids like Jonas deserve our support- and we should do everything we can to help them succeed in life!
